Pocket Poetry Presentations
There will be seven groups of four people and one group of five people.
Each group will be assigned two chapters (chapters 1-14). Search your chapters for four pieces of pocket poetry and one example of realism, regionalism, or naturalism. 1. Record the quote (MLA parenthetical citation), 2. identify which term it represents, and 3. explain what the poetic term adds to the story (that a literal term wouldn’t add). Below is an example; you may NOT use this as your example. You and your group will present these to the class
Example: Jimmie “swore at the men as fools, for he himself could perceive that Providence had caused it clearly to be written, that he and his team had the unalienable right to stand in the proper path of the sun chariot, and if they so minded, obstruct its mission or take a wheel off” (Crane 17). This is an allusion to the Greek or Roman gods, who drove the chariot pulling the sun. Without the cart pulling the chariot, the sun would not rise. The allusion is useful because shows just how determined Jimmie is to have his own way. He would rather put the whole world into darkness than be inconvenienced. The allusion shows that stubbornness more than just stating it would.
